Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959) is another movie that sits right in the sweet spot of what #NotQuiteClassicCinema is all about. It’s a movie that could have been shown on Not Quite Classic Theatre back in the 1980s – and maybe it was. I wish there was a way I could go back and look up all the titles that I may have watched back in those days. Alas, TV was a fleeting thing back then. I’ve probably rambled on about having “bad movie nights” with certain friends of mine before. One of those friends, whom I’ll call Den (since that’s his name), used to go straight for the New Release shelf whenever we would go to rent movies together. I, on the other hand, used to go to the more unusual corners of the store: the Horror section (not so unusual), the Cult section (a little more offbeat) and the Something Weird Video section (yes, they had their own section, like Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorcese – and it was fairly off-the-beaten path for most customers). I’m going to keep this fairly short. Hell’s Bloody Devils (1970) is another Al Adamson special; a film that he created out of an older film (in this case, The Fakers / Smashing the Crime Syndicate (1968), which I wrote about a few weeks ago), by adding some newly shot footage to it. As I noted at the time:

The Fakers (1968)… doesn’t even get it’s own page on the IMDb. It’s simply referred to as an alternate title for Hell’s Bloody Devils (1970). This can’t be true. Al Adamson shot a bunch of footage involving bikers and added it to The Fakers (1968) in order to cash in on the popular biker genre – or so I’ve heard. There isn’t a single biker to be found in The Fakers (1968), so how can it be the same movie? Continue reading →

Perusing the shelves of my local video stores, I would often see VHS copies of both Rolling Vengeance (1987) and Rolling Thunder (1977). I knew that one of them was supposed to be good, but which one was it…? Unsure, I would often pass both of them up and rent something else. Eventually, I figured out that Rolling Thunder was the more admired of the two – and it is indeed a very good movie. But any title that includes the word Vengeance is automatically appealing to me. So, when I found a reasonably priced VHS tape of Rolling Vengeance in a bargain bin, I grabbed it and headed for the till. Continue reading →

I’m not sure how I’d never seen The Black Sleep (1956) before last week. It’s got an amazing cast of horror heavyweights, including Bela Lugosi in his last completed performance. Yes, he appears in Ed Wood’s Trashterpiece Plan 9 from Outer Space (1957), but as well all know, his part was finished by Ed’s wife’s chiropractor(?!) after Lugosi died.  Continue reading →
